Christmas is here! And there’s no better way to celebrate this festive season than by getting together with family and friends!

But while the Christmas holiday is the perfect occasion for merrymaking, it is also one of the deadliest times of the year for traffic accidents because more people are in a celebratory mode and consuming alcohol. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), around “371 people may die on U.S. roads this Christmas Day holiday period.”

How to Avoid Getting Into a Car Accident During the Holidays

Keeping this figure in mind, you must do all you can to avoid becoming a part of the statistics. After all, Christmas is supposed to be a joyous celebration with loved ones – not a time to meet with auto accidents lawyers and deal with the tragic consequences of a car crash.

Following these tips will help you avoid auto accidents this Christmas:

1. Never Drink and Drive.

It’s never a good idea to drive after consuming any amount of alcohol. Remember that “buzzed” driving is still drunk driving, so if you consume some alcohol at a family gathering or a workplace party, don’t attempt to drive yourself home.

Getting arrested for drunk driving carries harsh consequences. But even if you don’t get caught, you still run the risk of injuring yourself or others. If you’re planning to drink at a party, don’t forget to delegate a designated driver or, better yet, call a cab.

2. Always Watch Your Speed.

A lot of people are rushing to get somewhere during Christmas, mostly on their way to a party or for some last-minute Christmas shopping. No matter how pressed for time you are, resist the temptation to speed. There are more cars on the road during the holiday season, some operated intoxicated or impaired drivers

Make sure to drive at a safe speed at all times. Driving too fast can cause you to lose control of your vehicle and affect your ability to react to dangerous traffic situations. If possible, leave for your destination early so you have plenty of time for travel.

3. Follow at a Safe Distance.

Many drivers make the mistake of following the vehicle in front of them too closely. If the driver of the vehicle in front suddenly slams on the brakes, there’s a higher risk for collision.

Statistics reveal that rear-end collisions are the most common type of traffic accident. To avoid this, make sure to keep a safe distance from the car in front of you. Allow at least one car length of space between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead to give yourself enough time to react in case of rapid lane changes, sudden stops, and other unexpected events on the road.

4. Don’t Drive Tired.

Holidays can be very busy and stressful, which means it’s not uncommon for drivers to be drowsy or weary. Driving while fatigued is just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated, so avoid driving if you’re tired as much as possible.

If you’re spending Christmas or New Year out of town, make sure to get enough rest and take frequent rests in between. Driving for lengthy periods can put a strain in your body. Don’t push yourself too hard. Make plans to spend the night somewhere or switch with another driver so you can get some sleep.

5. Avoid Any Forms of Distraction.

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of road accidents and highway fatalities across the country. And while all forms of driving distractions are dangerous, the use of mobile phones is the most concerning. This is because anytime you use your phone, whether for text messaging or accessing an application, most of your attention is engaged.

Always pay your full attention to the road when you’re driving, especially when you’re navigating through highways or in congested areas like malls and shopping centers – not just during the Christmas season but all-year-round.

Did You Get Injured in a Traffic Accident?

While it’s true that being prepared and extra vigilant when driving during the holidays does not eliminate all chances of road mishaps, it significantly lessens the risk of traffic accidents.

But should you or a loved one end up in a car accident due to someone else’s negligence, working with experienced personal injury attorneys will help you get the care and compensation you deserve.

This is a timely and essential read. The emphasis on avoiding alcohol and distractions is crucial, especially with holiday festivities. I'd also add that ensuring your tires are in good condition is a basic but often overlooked safety measure. For anyone concerned about image clarity in their own content, remember that quality reducer tools can sometimes be more harmful than helpful for critical information.
